SHOCK AND STRUT REPLACEMENTS

Your vehicle’s shocks or struts are responsible for absorbing any bumps you may have out on the road. Like any other component on your car, these parts are liable to wear out, bend, or break. Your suspension will wear more quickly if you take your vehicle off road, or if you drive on poor road conditions often. Be wary of handling problems or a bumpy ride, two of the most common suspension problems. Most manufacturers recommend shock or strut service every 50,000 miles or so. Have your suspension inspected and your shocks or struts replaced at Urban Autocare.

CONTROL ARM AND BALL JOINT REPLACEMENTS

Your vehicle’s control arms and ball joints provide added support for the weight of the vehicle, transferring weight evenly to the wheels. However, these components can wear out, and they wear out more quickly in vehicles where the axle bears more of the vehicle load. Ball joints tend to last around 100,000 miles or more (depending on the use of the vehicle), and control arms can be bent, broken, or damaged over time. Take note, ball joints also have casings which contain grease that maintains the joint, and these casings can become unsealed, opening the ball joint to faster wear and tear. Keep an ear out for squeaky joints when you turn or go over a bump, which may indicate an issue with the ball joints of your vehicle.

SIGNS OF SUSPENSION PROBLEMS

  • Riding rough: Does your car struggle to absorb bumps? Then your suspension system is shot. Your struts or shocks should soften bumps and potholes, providing you with a smooth ride even on moderately uneven surfaces. If your vehicle rides rough or bounces for some time after a bump, then you may need to replace suspension components.
  • Wandering steering or speed wobbles: Your vehicle should drive relatively straight as the steering wheel is straight. If you experience wandering steering or your vehicle begins to vibrate at high speeds, then you may have a suspension issue. These problems may be caused by an insecure, damaged, or bent control arm, or they may be caused by worn out shocks or struts, among other issues with the steering system.
  • Uneven tire wear: Ideally, well-aligned tires will wear evenly, which means that the tires will last longer, and you’ll have better control on the road. However, with poor suspension or alignment, you may experience uneven tire wear. Look for uneven wear on the inner edge and outer edge of your tire, which may indicate a suspension or alignment issue. You may also have “scalloped” tire wear, which looks like patches of wear that run diagonally along the surface of the tire. This is an indication that the suspension system is bent or worn-out.
  • Squeaking sounds: If you hear squeaking sounds coming from the axle when your vehicle goes over a bump or while you make a turn, then your suspension system may be to blame. Often, squeaking sounds come from the ball joint of the vehicle, which may be an indication that dust has made its way into the ball joint casing, or the joint may be worn out. You may also have issues with the control arm itself.
